How to Read Google Play Books on Kindle or BOOX (EPUB Conversion Guide)

You bought a book on Google Play Books, but you want to read it on a BOOX, Kindle, or another dedicated e-reader — not on your phone. The E-ink screen is just easier on the eyes.

This guide covers how to export an export-enabled Google Play Books title as a clean EPUB you can use on any device.

Important: Only do this with books you’ve purchased yourself, for reading on your own devices. Sharing converted files is copyright infringement.

What You Need

  • Adobe Digital Editions (free, Mac/Windows) — download from the Adobe website
  • Calibre (free, Mac/Windows/Linux) — download from calibre-ebook.com
  • A Google Play Books title with the export option enabled

Step-by-Step

Step 1 — Export the ACSM file from Google Play Books

  1. Go to play.google.com/books and open your library
  2. Click the three-dot menu on the book you want
  3. Select Export → Export as EPUB (ACSM)
  4. A .acsm file downloads to your computer

If there’s no export option in the menu, the publisher has disabled it. This method won’t work for that title.

Step 2 — Open the ACSM file in Adobe Digital Editions

  1. Launch Adobe Digital Editions
  2. On first launch, sign in with a free Adobe ID or authorize your computer
  3. Double-click the .acsm file (or drag it into ADE)
  4. The book downloads into your ADE library
  5. Find the file on disk: Documents > Digital Editions — there’s your .epub file

Step 3 — Convert with Calibre

  1. Launch Calibre
  2. Drag the .epub from your ADE library folder into Calibre
  3. Select the book and click Convert books in the toolbar
  4. Set Output format (top right) to EPUB
  5. Click OK — conversion is done
  6. Find the output in your Calibre library folder (default: ~/Calibre Library/Author/Title/)

Right-click the book in Calibre → Open containing folder to jump straight to the file in Finder/Explorer.

Getting the EPUB onto Your Device

BOOX

  • USB cable — drag and drop the file
  • Send to BOOX app on your phone or PC for wireless transfer
  • Upload to Google Drive, then download from BOOX’s built-in browser

Kindle

Older Kindles don’t support EPUB natively, so one extra step:

  • In Calibre, convert to MOBI or AZW3 and transfer via USB
  • Or use Amazon’s Send to Kindle app — drop the EPUB in and it converts automatically (newer Kindle models support EPUB directly)

Kobo / other e-readers

Most modern e-readers (Kobo, PocketBook, etc.) support EPUB natively. Connect via USB and copy the file to the Books folder.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I read Google Play Books on Kindle?

Yes, for books that allow export. Export the book as an ACSM file from Google Play Books, open it in Adobe Digital Editions, convert it with Calibre, then transfer the file to your Kindle.

Does this work for all Google Play Books titles?

No. Only titles where the publisher has enabled the export option. If you don't see an export button on the book's menu, the publisher has blocked it and this method won't work.

Calibre shows a DRM error or the conversion fails.

You must open the ACSM file in Adobe Digital Editions first and let it fully download before adding the file to Calibre. Skipping ADE means the DRM is still active and Calibre cannot convert it.

How do I transfer the converted EPUB to BOOX?

Connect via USB and copy the file directly, use the Send to BOOX app for wireless transfer, or upload to Google Drive and download from BOOX's built-in browser.

Is this legal?

Converting a purchased book to a different format for personal use on your own devices is generally considered fair use in many countries. Sharing or distributing the converted file to others is copyright infringement. Only apply this to books you have legitimately purchased.
