Frequently Asked Questions

What is VAT?

VAT (Value Added Tax) is a consumption tax added at each stage of the supply chain. It's used in over 160 countries worldwide. In some countries, it's called GST (Goods and Services Tax).

How do I know which VAT rate to use?

Use the standard rate for your country. Some goods (food, books, etc.) may qualify for a reduced rate. Select your country from the rate panel to set the correct rate automatically.

Is VAT the same as sales tax?

Similar but not identical. VAT is collected at every stage of production, while sales tax is typically collected only at the final point of sale. The US uses sales tax (varies by state), while most other countries use VAT.

Can I claim VAT back?

Businesses registered for VAT can reclaim input VAT on business expenses. Tourists may also be eligible for VAT refunds on purchases made abroad.
